Book Awards

When you are trying to find a new book, a good place to start is with award winners.  These award winners are purchased for our High School LMC.  Look for the Award Winner sections.  Check OPALS to see what we have available or stop in.

Alex Award

The Alex Awards are given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18. The winning titles are selected from the previous year's publishing

Michael Printz

The Michael L. Printz Award annually honors the best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit, each year. In addition, the Printz Committee names up to four honor books, which also represent the best writing in young adult literature.

Pura Belpre Award

The award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. It was established in 1996, is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.

Coretta Scott King Award

The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values. The award commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King.

YALSA Nonfiction Award

The YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction honors the best nonfiction book published for young adults (ages 12-18) during a Nov. 1 – Oct. 31 publishing year.

Edgar Award

The Edgar Award, in honor of Edgar Allan Poe, is given by the Mystery Writers of America to the best mystery fiction and nonfiction from the previous year.  it was first awarded in 1954.

Nebula Award

The Nebula Awards are chosen by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) in the following categories: Novella, Novellette, Short Story, Script, and Novel

Morris Award

The William C. Morris YA Debut Award, first awarded in 2009, honors a debut book published by a first-time author writing for teens and celebrating impressive new voices in young adult literature. 

Batchelder

The Batchelder Award is given to the most outstanding children’s book originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States, and subsequently translated into English for publication in the U.S.

Scott O'Dell Award

Scott O'Dell established this award to encourage other writers--particularly new authors--to focus on historical fiction. He hoped in this way to increase the interest of young readers in the historical background that has helped to shape their country and their world.

Newbery Award

The Newbery Medal was named for 18th century British bookseller John Newbery. Awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, part of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Sibert Award

The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal is awarded annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational book published in the United States in English during the preceding year.

National Book Award

More than sixty years since its creation, the National Book Awards continues to recognize the best of American literature raise the cultural appreciation of great writing promote the enduring value of reading, and advance the careers of established and emerging writers. Awards are announced every November.

Hugo Award

The Hugo Award is award by the World Science Fiction Convention membership.  Hugo Awards are given in dozens of literary categories.

Bram Stoker Award

Each year, the Horror Writer's Association presents the Bram Stoker Awards for Superior Achievement, named in honor of Bram Stoker, author of the horror work, Dracula.
